Preservatives

When incorporating more than 5% water into a product, it is imperative to carefully select an efficient preservative system. In our pursuit of safety and effectiveness, we have curated a collection of natural preservatives that have garnered widespread acceptance in the realm of human cosmetics and haircare. Even our HEALING SALVE, despite its anhydrous nature (lack of water), undergoes the inclusion of a preservative. We firmly uphold the principle of formulating products that not only yield remarkable outcomes but also prioritize the well-being of both yourself and your equine companion.

  • Sodium Benzoate (and) Potassium Sorbate (and) Water

    This is a liquid preservative for personal care products, with strong, broad-spectrum effectiveness against bacteria, yeast and mold. This mild blend is compliant with many natural certification requirements.

    This is used in our REFRESHED - Helmet+ Spray.

  • Benzyl Alcohol (and) Potassium Sorbate (and) Sodium Benzoate (and) Water

    This is a liquid, broad-spectrum preservative blend that is suitable for organic and natural formulations. Is it a great alternative to traditionally used preservatives.

    This is used in our CLEANSED - Waterless Shampoo & Spot Remover.

  • Phytocide Elderberry OS

    This is an efficacious, multi-functional natural alternative to the traditional preservatives used in cosmetic and personal care applications. This product is oil-soluble and can be used in a variety of anhydrous and oil-containing formulations. It is ideal for use in skin conditioning and antimicrobial applications.

    This is used in our HEALING SALVE.

  • Glyceryl Caprylate (and) Glyceryl Caprate (and) Glyceryl Laurate (and) Caprylhydroxamic Acid

    This preservative is derived from sustainable coconut oil. It is a multi-functional ingredient
    in cosmetic and haircare formulations - it functions as a broad spectrum preservative, emulsifier, and refatting active.

    This is used in our ECO-GROOM Sheath & Udder Cleaner.

  • Benzyl Alcohol (and) Benzoic Acid (and) Dihydroacetic Acid

    This preservative is a mild blend, and is compliant with many natural certification requirements. It is safe for use in cosmetic formulations with a skin-friendly pH value of up to 6, which aligns with our formulations for horse hair and skin (their PH is 7.2 - 7.5). It has a broad, balanced spectrum of effectiveness against bacteria, yeasts and mold fungi. This is used in our UNTANGLED Mane & Tail Treatment products.

  • Gluconolactone (and) Sodium Benzoate

    Aside from its proven broad spectrum activity, wide range of global regulatory approvals and broad formulation compatibility, it also contributes an added skin moisturization benefit and has conformance with ECOCERT, COSMOS, NATRUE and the Soil Association.

    What makes this preservative unique is the synergy between the two ingredients which allows for its broad spectrum efficacy. Typically, organic acids on their own are too weak and often require a co-preservative or booster in order to perform optimally. The gluconolactone in this blend works in conjunction with the sodium benzoate to act as an efficient preservative booster, slowly releasing gluconic acid over time thereby contributing to the broader preservation effect. This is used in our UNTANGLED Mane & Tail Treatment products.
